teaching little boys

dear emily,

i have had several moms fretting about their little boys and school.
it is really so unfair that most schools are geared toward little girls,
who delight in slipping into their seats, arranging their pencils
neatly in the tray and their books beneath.

little boys, on the other hand, view their classrooms as auschwitz
death camps, and those same desks as torture chambers.  the only
redeeming grace is that the desk makes an excellent drum for the
pencil/drumstick.

mrs. hitler, unfortunately,  does NOT allow any drumming,
tapping, whistling, or paper throwing.  the children must walk in
straight lines, not touching their neighbors, to the exercise yard,
where no pushing, pulling, or wrestling is tolerated.

School Kid

when your little one comes home, however, you can let him
run and play until his heart's content.  after he has worn himself
out, spend a very short time teaching him, and a very long time
reading to him about every adventure you can find.  make sure
he is snuggled in tight, as that is the only confinement he loves.

love,
lea

ps.  i'm sure many boys have cried out, "save me, o God, for the
waters have come up to my neck!"   psalm 69:1

I'm thinking the boy's school concept is a good idea all over again. Especially if good men found among the faculty.

(PS: We encourage our cats to rat...they prefer Mr. B. to the dirty work and then they can pretend that they were part of the hunt late. My cats are ridiculous...)

As a former teacher of first and second grades, I smiled to think of myself as "Mrs. Hitler." So true, of course, this post about the boys and their struggles with sitting still. I think teachers are getting better at allowing little escapes and ways to burn energy. I know one teacher who always asked her class, and this directly after recess, who wanted to run. It was such fun to watch them run and run. It didn't take them long to settle in for afternoon classes after that.

I absolutely love this post...I have twin eleven yr. olds that are at home with me and they make a trek hourly to the trampoline...sometimes I join them to jump off steam!!!
Thanks for the encouragement. I've always thought God has a sense of humor to give me FOUR boys...and only one girl...but then two granddaughters to relax a little.

Thank you for your interest in helping with Haiti. It really means a lot. My sister will be going to help with Heartline Haiti Orphanage and Women's program. They have set up a make shift medical clinic in the living room of their personal home This is their link.

You can navigate from there for all of their personal info. Thanks, again!
