dear emily,

this summer i spent several nights alone in the mountains which was
kind of scary with the bears, mountain lions, coyotes, and all.   sure
enough, one night i was awakened by a squealing cry that chilled me.
some poor animal was certainly being murdered by a predator.

when i flashed my trusty light out the window it reflected off dozens
of eyes.  creepy and not fair to the deer, fox, or chipmunks.

the next morning i heard the same cry and opened the curtains to see
not a corpse but a herd of about 75 elk!   i guess because He made
them so beautiful, the Lord didn't give them lovely voices.

i took a few terrible photos from my window having heard that elk
were skittish.   i even tiptoed onto our porch without disturbing
them, but when i clicked the camera again they stampeded down
the hill.

quite a thrill.

see the baby?

How exciting that must have been! They are truly elegant creatures with a snort and a cry that would give a gal a start.

That is so pretty. I am glad you were able to get a shot of them.
That eye thing always creeps me out. To shine a flashlight and see all of the eyes looking back.
You are brave.

oh, Lea, those elk are magnificent! I've never been frightening of staying alone and love my 3 a.m. pasture walks. although, those are fewer in number now, since bear have been sighted in the valley.

That was a rare treat! My sister and brother in law have camels and zebras out in Oregon. Whe I wake up there, I feel like I'm in Africa. All of these creatures are so amazingly different, and having a whole herd must have been a thrill.

Glad you are back in civilization, and writing again, although if you have to 'go away'... Colorado is still one of my favorite places!

Great shot. I don't think I've ever seen or heard an elk in real life.

What lovely creatures to see in such numbers and in the wild. Noises in the night can be disturbing if you don't know what it is.

Dearest Leah,

My garden was the site this summer for a couple of bunny mishaps.....someone lets their cat loose in the neighborhood and the bunnies have no chance to make it. It was horrible. BUT the Lord is good to all and I trust that His creations are never wasted.

THANK YOU FOR VISITING! And yes, those pink shoes...I NEED THEM TOO! Anita

how embarrassing - I was not signed into my own account when I posted a comment about the elk - it's under B Suess --so if you could delete that one it would be great. :-)
