remember the book, everything i know i learned in kindergarten? if i
wrote a book, it would be called, all my orneriness was committed in
church. pretty sure it would be a best seller.
kids are going to be ornery, and if you spend night and day at church, that's
where you're going to err. at least, that's my excuse.
now i had a sidekick, or i was the sidekick, but she is a highly respected
minister, so i can't reveal her secret identity. she is adored by all her
flocks for her insightful preaching and caring heart. she will pray for you
at the drop of a hat. she even did that in high school!
but that's not where we were ornery. no, pretty much only in church.
at church camp, we unscrewed all the sugar lids, put a napkin over the
top, and gently turned them upside down. then we carefully balanced
the lids on the actual bottom. when an unsuspecting counselor wanted
a little sugar in his coffee . . . voila!
when we were supposed to be singing sweetly in choir, we were really
sneaking all over the church. and by all over, i mean every square inch
from the basement to the 16th floor prayer room. if we were caught
there, we had a great excuse . . . praying, of course.
we had to be good in sunday school, though, because the teacher was
my future mother in law. we still had a secret way of communicating
that pretty much made fun of every single person in the class, just not
my mother in law to be.
i've managed to misuse the word 'pretty' three times, and i think that
was a freudian slip, because my friend is really pretty!
anyway, the moral of the story is, "parents, do NOT let your kids go to
sunday school!" :)
love,
lea

No Sunday school for us...
Wishing you a lovely new week, Lea, hope you'll enjoy a lot of sunshine! xx
I am shocked, positively shocked!
Very funny. ;-)
If you think this shocked me... you should have seen US growing up. Our dad was a minister, and how he survived US is a miracle all by itself! I remember getting hysterical giggles in the midst of his very serious and wonderful sermon one day... I could NOT stop!! The whole pew was shaking!
Now, when I think back on the grace he showed to me... it is so humbling. So... hopefully as I see this next generation of ours in sunday school... I will show them the same grace... :D
Oh and I forgot to say... what was it about all of us?? We wandered ALL over the church constantly, especially when we were supposed to be sitting in the service! Was it just you and me Lea... or are there others out there too??!!
I would definitely read your book ;) The title alone made me laugh out loud, can't imagine what would be hiding away inside!
Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!
Whoever said church isn't fun? :)
So Funny!
I was a Preacher's Kid, so I have a few of those moments of my own...
Thank goodness for God's mercy and grace. And, for how beautifully he changes hearts!
Love,
Joyce
my, my, my,...such fun memories, this just proves that He has a sense of humor...still smiling rosie
Hello there dear friend of Rosie! I thank you so much for your kind visit and OH....do I know this scene of which you speak!!!! In the final analysis, it will be HOW we handled all of this! I am a teacher, and DEAR GOD help me.....there are days!!! The best and most dramatic example of God's mercy and love is someone who can hold it all together, forgive, love in spite of and move on!!! Thank you, Anita
LOL...that is too funny!!
I did not grow up in church, so I missed all of that stuff, I met a gal once who told me pretty much the same things and told me to never let my kids do that, so I didn't, boy, did I and still continue to catch flack about it.
It is funny to read that you did all of those things. :)
Funny story! I always think children misbehave (or are just a little bit louder than ordinary) in church because it's so much quieter there than any place else. Thanks for the welcome back!
This is very funny. She ended up being your mother-in-law?
My parents dropped us off at different Sunday Schools. We attended Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, and Assembly of God. However, I seem to remember that we behaved ourselves. :)
I guess you have to be a preacher's kid to act out in SS?
Too funny! Aren't church kids supposed to be perfect?????? LOL! Carla
ha ha ha! i worked in the 3 yr old classroom at church for years and can wholeheartedly agree that kiddos are so rotten on sunday mornings! but, i still loved them!
Your too funny Lea
Naughty girls.. and one that grew up to be a minister... I think it's lovely to retain that mischievous nature.. I have friends that still do that in work meetings.. and we are nearing 50!! haha...
thanks for you lovely comment.. it is my neck that is giving me grief amongst other things.. but makes me slow to blog sometimes.. have a lovely week xxx Julie
Lea, my best friend in elementary is now a minister and once we snuck into the church kitchen and opened the box of communion wafers - accidentally spilling them all over the place. What did we do with the half empty box? Crushed them up and put them in the croûton box for the salad bar that week (small church). Nobody ever found out about it until years later when she used the story in a sermon - BUSTED!
ok, you are so kicked out of choir! :)
So funny.... I think I was too afraid to cause any trouble..
Warm blessings,
Spencer
Believe it or not, I grew up Catholic, so there was no such thing as moving or even speaking in church. And I can tell you of a truth I did not!
I've been of the Baptist persuasion all of my adulthood and my husband a Baptist preacher. And yes...my children were typical "preacher's kids". Ha!
SO unfair! LOL!
I was so well behaved ... except in Sunday School.
I am the Sunday school teacher!
This was so fun to read!!

Church just brings out the devil in all of us I suppose!!! I remember being a bit naughty (but in relatively harmless ways) at many a church function. The better you are supposed to be, the more tempting it is to be bad!
Oh how funny! I never would have thought that darling Lea had a little bit of devil in her..wink wink!
Too funny! My parents used to clean the little church that we attended when we were really young girls. Good thing I was not any older or I would have been committing naughty crimes. I do recall pretending I was a Sunday School teacher while they were cleaning though. I used the largest classroom, and it was filled to the brim with pretend students. I went around the room as if playing duck, duck, goose, but I was having them accept Christ so I could get more stars on my heavenly crown.

My SS sidekick was Gayle. I had to laugh when you mentioned choir practice...we literally retreated to our big sanctuary and crawled on our bellies from the back of the church, all the way to the altar... time and again, until they couldn't find us one night and called in the troops. Then there was the Sunday we were allowed to sit in the balcony by ourselves and during the offering the plate somehow went flying out of my grip onto the tiled floor below.
We've long since grown up and gone on, but just last night I heard her familiar voice on my answering machine, reminding me that we're not so far apart from those days and that SS was, indeed, a good fit for friendship.
peace~elaine
Love it!
