you may have a heart of gold - but so does a hard-boiled egg

dear emily,

i had the frustrating experience of peeling a dozen eggs this week.  one
stubborn shell kept grabbing chunks of its nutritious 'white', no matter
how carefully i plied.   in agitation, i chucked it down the disposal.  that
was satisfying, until i realized i had just thrown the baby out with the bath
water.

many of my friends had counsel for me.  "pour a little salt in the boiling
water . . . pour some baking soda in the water . . . boil for 5 minutes . . .
boil for 20 minutes . . . let cool water run between the shell and the egg
after boiling . . . only use old eggs."

if i could have run cool water between the shell and the egg, then i could
have removed the darn shell instead!    why would i want to eat an old
egg?   and, how did i get to be such an old egg without knowing how to
peel them??

in many ways i am like those pesky eggs.   i hold onto my shell with such
tenacity that my very skin and muscle seem to peel away with its removal.
thankfully, the Lord has put patient people around me who, hopefully, will
not throw me down the disposal.

love,
lea

I've had a hard time with boiled eggs also, but I love the way you described it. You may not have gotten all the shell off those eggs but you sure did crack me up reading about it:)

This is a fantastic analogy! I had the same problem this Easter tryig to make deviled eggs. I had to go out and buy another dozen eggs as I ruined a few from the first dozen...lol

Thanks for you support on my "Poise" products post. Menopause seems to be a taboo subject for many and I don't understand why? Woman should embrace it as stage of life -- a badge of honor for living long and enterig the age of wisdom and grace.

You title made me laugh out loud and your tribulations with the pesky eggs made me laugh more. Because of course I too have had the same trouble.

Wonderful! Especially timely as so many of us have had first-hand experience recently. :D

Okay, I just have to share this--

Pioneer Woman's way of peeling eggs is da bomb.

Boil the eggs--no secret here-I think it is for 15 minutes--

Pour off the water and put ice on them for about 10 minutes or so to cool them.

Break them all over all around--

Roll them between the palms of your hands.

It takes about 5 seconds to peel an egg--no joke.

I went to her website to find out exact directions but couldn't find the page. I think this is pretty close on the times though.

It really is amazing!

sigh... it's true isn't it? I also got old without knowing how to really peel an egg right. Sometimes I get lucky and it just peels right off, other times, egg-zactly like you said!

Next time you fly over Dallas, why not stop?? Janette and I haven't even met yet and she lives an hour north of me. Have fun in L.A. :)

good and wise post....and since Patience is what I am teaching my 1st grade class...I know we never grow old enough not to need it!

Are you going to LA to hear your kids sing? Have fun whatever the reason

Enjoyed this word picture--how like those eggs we can sometimes be! Our shells can surely mask a lot of pain as well as beauty.

I feel like there is so much more to your last paragraph Lea. Maybe another whole letter. :)

Laughing as always with your stories. And I think I am getting thrown down the disposal...

Have a wonderful week! It's cloudy and grey here, and supposed to snow again this week, but someday, someday, the sun and spring will return to Minnesota!

This is so cute! Writing all these letters to her here..life lessons from mama :) Love that! Eggs...never turn out the same any time for me :)

Thanks for stopping by from Kate's! Yes I am her tech person which is VERY scary since I really know nothing! But she thinks I am a genius so I just pretend I am :)

Hi Lea,
I just read your comment about being complicated and am laughing so hard. If you only knew...

I have to hand it to my poor husband, I really keep him on his toes. I love pink, all things girly, love, love, love glitter with a passion, but did I ever mention that I play professional football? Tackle, (not to be confused with the lingerie league...) complete with full pads and loads of sweat(and I now completely understand why guys pat each other on the butt after a good play...) On the off season I play hockey and throw pink parties with all the frills. (I have even been known to sew a bit...)

Oh my, am I ever complicated. You hit the nail right on the head.

Ahh yes, thankful He has not already chucked me down the disposal. Or down the chute with Veruca the Bad Egg.

Such a great analogy... thanks
