tell me a story

dear emily,

there are few things i love more than a good story.  don't give me
a bunch of dates and battles to memorize; tell me the story of a
great battle, and i will remember every detail.  please don't beat
me over the head with a lesson about repentance from the
pulpit; give me a story about it from someone's life, and i will
be moved to repentance myself.

Jesus was the greatest storyteller of all.  He could have spent
all His time preaching and healing, but He seemed to love to
tell His story.  who could forget the one about the sower and the
seed or the unmerciful servant?  He reels us in about a poor
woman who loses her coin and then we understand how the
kingdom of heaven rejoices over a lost soul who is found.

the easiest way to reach the heart of a child is to tell him a story.
they can't resist a good one, and then their transparent, open
hearts soak in the goodness of the best ones. "the land of a rich
man brought forth plentifully; and he thought to himself, 'what
shall i do, for i have nowhere to store my crops . . ."(luke 12:17)

you can read the rest of the story.

love,
lea

I am the same way, show me or tell me and I will never forget. Just ask my poor kids at the stories they have to listen too, oops, I do that on my blog. I always have loved to listen to stories.

Your right! There's nothing like a good story!

I agree, a good story always grabs my attention. It can move me like nothing else.

Have a great day!

You're right about that. Stories
are a wonderful way to learn and
remember and I guess that's why
Jesus used them so much.
Blessings~

me too... a story or a song, both are sermons that reach me quickly.

Stay cool, if you're really lucky you're still in Colorado!

Oh so, so true...and I am so enjoying this age of 5 and telling stories to him...maybe that is why He says we should come as a child. I also like a lesson engulfed in music...it can touch my heart faster than anything.

I love that! So true and such wisdom there. Thank you for sharing that. It's really what I need to remember when I am trying to teach my children....a story~

I have been realizing that some people are simply gifted at this... I wish every night for my mother's creative storytelling gift - but thankfully, my son still asks for mine.

(And where did your First Baby post go? Just as I was about to comment on how utterly lovely it was?!? :)

You are right, stories or word pictures that's what I remember

Yes. Before I met the Lord at a tender young age, I had a friend who told me the stories. They drew me in.

I do think that we often learn more from stories without realizing it becuase we're so "distracted" that we don't realize we're learning.

Just a beautiful thought. No one wants to be told that they are lost, they want to be told their is hope. Through stories you always learn there is hope. =)

I think this love of story and putting ourselves in the "middle" of a story we hear is the reason Charlotte Mason style education is a wise way to educate.

I'm the same too. I like stories. Jesus always told stories that you could apply to your own life.

I wish we could all teach like He does.

My daddy is the best story-teller I know. My childhood was filled with them, especially at bedtime. I have a great love for story because of my father's willingness to invest some time and creativity in the telling of them. He also "lived" them as well--paving the way for me to understand and to receive the greatest story ever told!
