superman

it was tough on hans for our little ones to transition into big ones.
i missed their sweet kisses and long snuggles, but he pined for
everything young about them.

one of his mantras was that he could outlast them in any game
or hug.  he really did supply every single request for one more
toss onto the bed or another game of h-o-r-s-e.  he was their
hero, but i was just their mom.

therein lay the devastation for him.  when the kids turned 11 or
12, he also became just their dad.  it never occurred to me what
a demotion that was, not having ever enjoyed super hero status
myself.

can you imagine being the funniest comedian or the strongest
man in the world and then becoming clark kent . . . for the rest
of your life?

to help ease the adjustment, he occasionally kidnaps our best
friend's little boys, but, horror of all horrors, they are growing
up, too!  last month he told them that he wanted to take them to
the 'charles russell' show at our local museum.

he was gratified by their enthusiastic response, and on the way
began to tell the boys some minute details about charlie russell's
colorful, cowboy painting career.

"wait a minute!  i thought you were taking us to a wrestling
show!"

does anyone have a five year old boy he could rent?

love,
lea

Nope, but close...do a four-year-old and a three-year-old count? How wonderful that Hans can transition from his own children to giving someone else's this kind of special attention.

Now I have so much more to say on this subject, but I will reserve it. I talk too much. :D

Oh that is so sweet, It will all change when grand babies show up. As with my husband, "Pa" Is more awesome than sliced bread. With four boys and one grand daughter, my husband is "it" again. It is even cooler to watch him with grand children.Life just gets better, You know that poem, " Come grow older with me for the best is yet to be."
It is true.
Sweet post Lea

Lea, Oh, my heart hears these words so poignantly. It is nice to be the main shining light in their lives...and then they go to school and suddenly you are just another star in the galaxy.

And, somehow, being just one star of many doesn't feel quite right...and it feels like a loss and a sadness.

We are going through that again with our Grands. And it is no easier the second time around.

And it is sad.

But oh, the absolute and total joy when we can light up their whole world.

I loved this post.

Now I feel sad for Hans. =(

If it's any consolation, remind him that we do begin to see our parents as heroes again...eventually. Maybe not SUPERheroes, but heroes, nevertheless.

Any grandkids on the horizon? That would give Clark Kent his cape and a warm fuzzy pair of slippers to boot!

Missed ya, girl....

I have just been noticing lately how excited my husband gets when our older children come over. He is over eager for a game of chess or arrangements to get together for golf...I guess he really does miss playing Superman!

Love those 5 year olds! I have one and would like to "freeze" her but she says she won't ever be a mommy if she stops growing... oh the logic of a 5 year old. I say, "Quit thinking! Just obey mommy." :-)

I have never thought of it that way for my husband. Great perspective.

no matter how old they are, i know 3 little guys (and their dad) who will always think of hans as superman and eddie murphy rolled into one big, funny friend!

Aww, that's going to be tough! My kids are 5 and 3, so I think Hubby and I will both mourn the moments we change in their eyes.

Awww! I know the devastation! My husband is beginning to feel some of the same feelings too. It is hard for them to be relinquished to just normal when they have been the life and soul of our children's lives. Of course I, like you, never did live in such a super hero state in any of my kid's minds. So it is not as tough for me either. I hear the super hero status comes back when they get to be in their 30's though. :)

Oh! Heartbreak. Makes me feel so sad for him, HOWEVER, I do have some "rentals". ;) One 7 year old reptile lovin' boy, a 5 year old darling girl, and an almost 3 little sugar pie boy. Will that do?

tell Hans we have a wonderful 5 year old, but he's taken!! Last night at his soccer game, as we walked up, he ran right off the field in the middle of his game. and jumped into Joe's arms... tell Hans to be patient... it'll all be there... again... in the grandkids!

lol. i know the feeling. fortunately we have grandchildren but alas, they are growing up too!! :)

Awww, your poor sweetie. We miss having little ones around, too. We have to get our fix in the church nursery, or working part-time in afterschool programs . . . there's nothing like being around someone who thinks you're a hero, even if it's only momentarily :)

I just posted a comment and it never showed up, so now that I'm re-doing it, you'll no doubt see 2!! Anyway.. We have a 5 year old, he isn't for rent though... last night at his soccer game as we walked up, he came bounding off the field right out of the game and jumped into Joe's arms! Tells Hans to be patient, he'll get his 5 year old.... again!

Your love for him is so precious. Truly you both seem like very charming people... I only wish I knew you in real life. I am grateful however that I can glean from you in this way.
So often I read your words and my heart sinks because of my daily struggles of home life. I love that I can be home, but the actual being home wearies me and I struggle to embrace it... and find myself most often, wishing it away. It's been my struggle since my first day as a mother... actually, and maybe more honestly, it's been my struggle all my life... wishing for the coming years, and when they arrive, wishing for the next batch. What can you say to encourage my mother's weary, struggling heart? Any words would be worth more than... well, anything! :) Thanks!!

You are a doll to have even clicked that link to the magazine. Unfortunately, the article is in the magazine, and not online. But thank you for even looking!

So I listened to Sunday Lane's You Tube song - OMG! I fell in love with her instantly! What a beautiful voice, and a beautiful face to match. But where was your cameo appearance? It would be cool to see this sweet angel's mum!

Hi Lea, I well remember when my husband became a Clark Kent as well. It can be so tough on the guys. But, if he only knew that he is still superman to me.
I enjoy your blog posts so much.

Lea, I saw this with my children and their dad too....especially when it came to my daughter who'd always been daddy's girl.

I think my husband has dealt with similar feelings. Our youngest child, a son, is now 16 and although they still enjoy a close relationship dear son is growing up and slowly but surely pulling away.

-smile- Yes, I bet there are plenty of 5 year old boys, who would love to have a "Hero" for a while.

And of course, that's what Grandchildren were *made* for.

My little one is only one and a half and is already aware of the idea of a superhero... I am just not it though.

thanks for stopping by the designer challenge and leaving a sweet message.

I have a 4 year old you can rent - cheap! He comes covered in dirt, messy hair, and mismatched clothes because he wants to dress himself!! :D I love watching the boys with Geoff at this point. Daddy is the coolest person in the world, and I am sad for the day when that changes. But for now, I just let them have their hero worship - simply because I think he's pretty cool myself!

That just almost made me cry... I was the one in our family who at least with my "big kids" was Wonder Woman... and I too have lost some of my status.. When I read this.. I just could see my sweet husband and our little man.. He is our SuperMan... and I know will just be crushed when he is moved to the ground. What a great post..

Lea...

OK girly...I'm a total mess now. How well I remember the moments when my son moved beyond the idolization of his father...and me.

It was hard for both of us.

I've always been close to my girl. Very close. Somehow I know I will always have her heart. But...I will, on occasion say out loud, "I miss B (her brother) when he was little". And my hubby says only one thing...

"Oh honey...I do, too! So very, very much!"

Childhood is fleeting.

Beautiful post.

Love, Rebecca
