bridge

dear emily,

i have to warn you about something, and i don't really
know how to say this.

so, i'm just going to blurt it out!  because you're so smart
and will want to keep your brain facile and undemented,
at my age, you will probably play, ahem, bridge.

when i was a sweet, spry, lovely thing like you, i used to
smirk at the little, old ladies with hats and  gloves looking
primly at their cards.  "that's something i will never do!"

little did i know that counting  those tricks and conniving
to win lots of points to the cheers from the  stands would
be so fun.

not to mention bridge clothes!  we only allow prada,
chanel, and versace at our table.  the butler will not
give access to any flip-flops or sweatpants.

and here's the best part:  bridge food!  some folks only
come for the cuisine, but i am a purist and have played
with a solitary glass of water. . .  while i heaped  the
dainty cucumber sandwiches, fresh veggies, and bite
sized lemon tarts upon my wedgewood plate.

so sorry for the bad news,
lea

activity under heaven. . ." ecclesiastes 3:1

Bridge? I don't know anything about Bridge. What I do know is Head and Foot and Baseball. Yup, both card games. My grandmother is a card fanatic. That's probably why she's so sharp at her age. Fun post!

I'm so impressed that you know how to play bridge. My grandparents played, but it has skipped the last 2 - no, make that 3 - generations so no one in my family knows how to play bridge.

Congratulations on your 100+ followers!

Too funny! My husbands gramdma tried to teach me how to play bridge. At 94, it is still her favorite game. I took her picture the other day and when I showed it to her, she was horrified. "Who is that old lady?" she asked. Sigh, I know very soon I am going to be that old lady.

Thank you for your sweet reply, Lea! Yes, you are right - Matthew, Mark, Luke & John ARE the best letters!

Bridge? I know nothing of bridge! I'm learning Penuchle, tho. It's pretty fun, but give me a game of 42 or Pitch and I'm happy!

I played heaps of bridge and other card games when I was at Uni. It is something that I relegated to my mispent youth rather than a well spent retirement.

Hi Lea, what a fun post and yes, we all become the *Old Ladies* of our past...
Thanks for the comment on my story about Sarah. I've let a few tears fall for her myself over the years. But don't tell your husband how it ends yet...it's not over...
Thanks for your fun wisdom (o:

Oh lawz...ain't this just the simple truth! All of it, every single word. I don't know how to play bridge, nor any other card game, but I do know I enjoy other sedentary projects - knitting, spinning, quilting, reading.

I have never been a card player, but I remember my grandmother going to play whist with her friends. They had a great time, she would take me when I was visiting her. RYC-Yes I love books about happy things. Have you ever read the Tales from Grace Chaple Inn series published by Gruidepost. They all have different authors so you have to know how to spot them in a bookstore. Once you find one it's easier. The first one is "Back Home Again" by Melody Carlson. Linda

and you ARE wearing hats and glove too aren't you? I will be very dismayed to learn that have forgotten about the lovely habit of hats and gloves when playing a lady like game of bridge.

PS: I haven't played bridge since college, over thirty years ago. We used to play at football games. Our football team wasn't very good.
