when i was your age, i went days without moisturizer much less makeup.
NOT because i was overwhelmed with keeping up with five children, but
because i had a makeup addiction. the acknowledgement of my disorder
led me to fast beauty products for a season.
my poor husband never said a word except, "i like you better without it."
he also said, "i like you better with some meat on your bones." what
a gift. him, not the extra 'meat'.
i realize now that my beauty obsession had its roots in a comment from my
father when i was young. i have a gorgeous mother and not the kind of
beauty that requires eyeliner or even lipstick. she rises from her sleep with
a pink flush on her perfect cheekbones. i was proud when she walked the
halls of my highschool, because she was prettier than the cheerleaders.
when my dad said, "you will never be as beautiful as your mother," i thought,
"well, duh." i don't think he meant to be cruel but was complimenting her, as
i was outgrowing my awkward, cygnet years. he didn't realize how hurtful
the remark was to his seventeen year old daughter.
how kind of the Lord to give me a husband who loves my heart. "beauty, oh
beauty, where is thy sting?"
now, let me just say that i have a loving relationship with my father, and i
still like makeup. every barn needs a nice coat of paint. this is a fun beauty
blog written by a young friend.

"Every barn needs a coat of paint", LOL. I use lipstick and a touch of hand lotion; to each her own. We are blessed to have hubbies who love us, aren't we?
I was just talking to a friend today, telling her that I try my best to never make comments to my imperfect kids (from my imperfect self) about what they supposedly lack in physical beauty.
My mother and brother teased me about one of my features when I was 9; probably once or twice, but enough to effect me for years until I realized that the feature was actually something that I was complimented on here and there by others.
I clicked over to the beauty blog. Over the last few months, I've been having a renewed interest in what I look like. lol And by the way, thanks for sharing your fashion routine on one of my recent posts. I like your compromise. :) When I find myself in the scarf, I'll try to remember to have my picture taken. :)
And lastly, as a child, or even as an adult, how nice it is to see your mother's beauty. I'm sure you are or were proud of her. We all have our various kinds of beauty.
In our humanity we get stung many times. Sigh.

Lea, what a gift you have in H and how kind he is to nurture you. Since Dave died, there have been days I suddenly realize, at day's end, I haven't brushed my hair or washed my face. Oh well.
So true that he is such a gift!
I have one of those mothers too... naturally beautiful and I have struggled to "measure up". I am so thankful that God doesn't put those standards on us and He asks us to give Him all of ourselves - even the non-beautiful parts.
And you? Are beautiful.

its funny huh how a single remark, sometimes an innocent one, can leave such a lasting effect. A reminder to me to guard my tongue!

I love that your Mom was so beautiful. I thought the same about mine, and still consider my Mom to be the most beautiful woman I ever saw too.
I am sure you are every bit as beautiful as your Mom. I remember asking my Dad if I was pretty, he said, " beauty is as beauty does." He never told me anything but that, I just wish he had said, " yes," I have been on that quest all of my life too. Now though, the barn doesn't change much with or without paint. :) When I was in third grade, One of my friends said, "Kim if beauty is skin deep you have very thin skin." So I knew that I wouldn't be pretty, so I better learn to be nice. So it all goes back to the Lord, I am still glad that while man looks at the outside God looks at the heart.
All this said though, I won't give up on the beauty part. :)

I've been thinking about inner beauty lately ... I have to depend on that :-)
I remember Elizabeth Taylor once said that she had reached an age where she got up in the morning, looked in the mirror, and realized "something must be done".
I'm not sure it's true of you, but this barn definitely needs a fresh coat every morning.
