side effects

dear emily,

we were chuckling about a drug commercial during the NBA playoffs
with a horrifying list of side effects:  cancer, severe stomach bleeding,
death.   my son mumbled, "does anyone even remember what drug is
being advertised?"

even if we could, i was not likely to take it.   what ailment could be worse
than severe stomach bleeding or death?  allergies, itchy scalp, aching pinky
fingers?

our generation has become accustomed to taking drugs for everything, and
there's no telling what we have done to ourselves.   my recent addition is
calcium plus 1200 units of vitamin D.   my parents worked outside for
their vitamin D, which is just one reason they are called the greatest
generation.

we'll probably be called the wimpiest generation,
lea

I'm afraid you are right--

But you made it humorous to think about--thanks!

Reading the side effect of medication is very scary, but they are worse case scenarios and have to be reported. We may be wimps, but we are well informed wimps!

Oh that is so funny and so true. We laugh at the LONG LIST of warnings with the Readers Digest drug
adds. Too funny! I think I would rather just be sick ;-)

It's the "leakage" warnings that make me say, "I'll have some. Thanks!"

Yup. I feel totally wimpy.

This is so true... I recall in the early days of recovering from the accident the doctors were prescribing meds ... I was shocked that for almost every med that I needed, I also needed another to combat side effects. It's a merry-go-round these pharmacies.

I'm finding that natural energy healing; faith, positive thinking is helping to lessen the need for some of the meds.

Great post my friend.

Quite a few months ago I decided that supplements had a way of making me feel dependent on them.

So now I don't take any drugs or supplements and depend on good food and the sun to keep me healthy. I feel fantastic.

I love this post! Husband and I often comment on the side effects of advertised drugs. One might as well just have the illness and not treat it!

i have thought this all many times! WHO would ever want to take these drugs after all those warnings? And it is definitely the generation of pop a pill for ANYTHING. The other day at the beach I was having such a hard time with my knees and once I lost my balance and bent my little toe backwards. (it turned purple right away and yet didn't even hurt compared to my knees) and right away someone said to me, "I have Vicodin. Do you want one?" Straight to the big guns without even thinking of Tylenol or Advil. I declined of course, but it is just how it is. Everyone thinks you must never feel anything...sad. Enjoy your day!

joan: you are an inspiration! but i keep hearing that the soil is depleted so that our food doesn't contain
the nutrients it used to. . . .

Smiling as I read this post. Hubby and I always get a laugh out of those drug commercials, especially when death is listed as a possible side effect. Why would anyone take a medication that will potentially make them feel worse than what ails them? lol

We laugh at those commercials too...just crazy that the side effects are the longest part of the commercials...just crazy!

I just looked up the soil depletion arguments ... I reckon it's the people selling supplements that are publishing those stories and pulling statistics out of context.

BTW the list of side effects is sometimes helpful, after my husband took a prescription drug and got one of the side effects I have been more respectful of the little leaflet in the box ,,. being forwarned is helpful provided you aren't the type to get a side effect just because you read it.

i wondered about that ole soil depletion
argument!

I'm one of those people who often gets a weird reaction to drugs so I try to steer clear of prescription stuff but I do take supplements. If only I could find a supplement that could make up for lack of exercise!

I just spent 3 months in the US and was shocked by the adverts for medicine. They all seem to have such a frightful list of side effects, I wondered why people took them in the first place. I'd rather live with the ailment, thank you.

I just had to laugh at a migraine medication commercial. In small print was something to the effect that the med worked to keep migraiines away for nine days, vs the placebo, that only worked for seven days. It then went on to say a very lengthy list of horrifying side effects. I turned to my hubby, "doesn't it seem better to just take the placebo every seven days?"

Hope you are having a fabulous summer. And i know that wedding went beautifully! My oldest daughter is 19 , and is not looking for a boyfriend, but I am still planning her wedding, trying to stay organized... Some people start with a groom first though!
