the sooner nation

thank you, sonja and janette, for having a little fun with our great
football game.  i can't think of a bigger competition, maybe ohio
state and michigan, or the presidential election!

janette has shared an inspiring story about her love for UT, and
she has the temerity to ask, "what is a sooner anyway?"  i'm glad
she asked.

'sooners' is the name given to the settlers who entered the midwest
in the unassigned territory of oklahoma before the indian appro-
priations act of 1989.  they were denied the right to claim the land
on which they settled, because they cheated by sneaking in early.

many 'sooners'  eventually became US marshals, which is ironic
considering they had broken the law themselves.   my husband's
great grandfather was one of those US marshals, which explains
some of my husband's own tendencies.

the 'sooner nation' is exemplified by our colorful, rambunctious,
victorious behavior on the football field.  we occasionally sneak
into the end zone.

Oh my 15 year old son was telling me the history...after being the one to tell me I had the wrong mascot, and he also photoshop my picture.

This is great...your blood runs red, like my blood runs orange.

Thanks for the fun....and sharing your heritage, which is really exciting.

Well, Lea, that is how my family got there too. They were Sooners and they were always very proud of that fact. My great-great grandmothers...were already there because of President Jackson and the Trail of Tears. But the Johnson part of my family were the Sooners. When we would go to the Trail of Tears museum my Aunt would stand and cry like it happened yesterday. My Johnson side had been living in Austin Texas and the Indian attacks by Quanah Parker sent them packing to Oklahoma.
I used to sit around and listen to those stories. It was amazing.

I don't want to interrupt the history lesson, though I could use a refresher course. It's been a few years since I learned about the Trail of Tears and the Sooners. The way you turn a phrase, Lea, is a delight.

Now, my dear, you may have been speaking metaphorically or off the cuff, but Charlotte truly is there and if you really know where she is, you have won the prize. Just sayin'!

You have a rich heritage. Although we don't have any Sooner relatives, my hubby collects things from the early west, (he just returned from appraising a collection of old Police and Sheriff badges from turn of the century and before), and he loved the story of your background, and we both enjoyed seeing the old photo.... I wonder if they played football back then?? :)

Forgive me for not commenting on the teams, I don't even know if they are football or baseball teams. But the history is interesting.

Lovely history lesson, especially since I am being bombarded with Sooner notions on a daily basis from one of my life-long girlfriends! I do love a good history lesson!

My husbands grandmother was a Sooner. She kept a journal and it is a fascinating read!

With that experience, you have a better chance in landing a permanent
job in a bigger hospital. It is important to understand all of the different
elements that go into interviewing for a massage position, and know which questions
to ask before you get hired. Complete rehab solutions provide
services for these type people.
