monday's mentoring mommy moment

dear emily,

it is terribly presumptuous of me to give you a thanksgiving craft
idea, since you are the master, but i couldn't resist.  these cards
are just so darn cute!

here's the link.

we also used to read every thanksgiving book i could get my
hands on.  here are a few you will love.

"squanto and the miracle of thanksgiving" by eric metaxas
"thanksgiving, a time to remember" by barbara rainey
"an old fashioned thanksgiving" by louisa may alcott

some great scriptures to memorize as we prepare our hearts for
thanksgiving are psalm 31:19, 95:1-6, and of course, psalm 100.
it's always an encouragement for mom and dad to tell what we
are thankful for, especially our precious children.  if the kids
want to  pipe in, that's even better.

many families forego their own meal to help serve dinner at the
homeless shelter.  i can't imagine anything to make a child's
thanksgiving richer or his heart more grateful than to help those
less fortunate.

i hope some of my friends will leave comments, because they
always have such wonderful ideas.

thankfully yours,
lea

"how great is Your goodness, which You have stored up for
those who fear You, which You bestow in the sight of men
on those who take refuge in You." psalm 31:19

One tradition that I've been doing each year is to reread Barbara Rainey's book "Thanksgiving: A Time to Remember". I purchased it several years ago and love to read it again each year.

The placecards are very cute.

Happy Thanksgiving to you!

Blessings and love,
Debbie

On Thanksgiving day Kim and I sit
down to dinner with our two boys
(young men, rather) and we talk
about all we have to be thankful
for as we enjoy our special dinner.
This is not so much a tradition as
a way of life though.
Lea, I hope you and your family
feel the abundance of His presence
as you celebrate this Thanksgiving.
Love,
Sandy

Greetings dear one,
Well, Happy thanksgiving to you and your sweet family...is your daughter home yet, or will she stay until Christmas...
That is such a delightful craft...some day I look forward to grandchildren that I might share these fun crafting moments with.
When I was VERY young, we would always make a pine cone turkey...pipe cleaner legs, craft paper feathers at one end and cute little paper head at the other.
...ah, so many good memories...
I am so thankful for you my dear and all the tender whispers He gives you, that you send our way...
For ALL the lives you touch, through this beautiful site He has gifted you with...Thank you...

This is great...since I still have little ones I love adding to our Thanksgiving book collection, so thanks for the suggestions...more good books to add to the coffee table.
My four year old will love the craft...I was going to do name cards with questions inside them to keep fun conversation going.
We have the joy of having my mother in law, age 95, come to be with us this year...she hasn't been to Thanksgiving in years.

College boys and others without a place to go will grace our table. I love when we open our doors to those who can't be with family.

Thanks so much for your suggestions I will have to add some new things this year.

I think in a year or two, my son will benefit from serving dinner at a homeless shelter. It would be a huge eye-opener for him.

And we had the best time "weaving" placemats for Thanksgiving out of construction paper and then decorating them with things we were thankful for and what we were going to eat for Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving day is not a holiday here. But every day is a chance for thanksgiving, right?
This year we're invited to eat with an American friend.

Thank you for the titles of some good books for Thanksgiving. Of course, Squanto was always a big hero in our home. So many do not know about all the incredible miracles with the Pilgrims. Squanto was sent by God. Great placecards. My grands will not be present for Thanksgiving dinner, but will be joining us for dessert later. I'd love to have a good book to read with them then.

Oh, I love the place card! Thanks for all the wonderful scripture references and book recommendations.:)
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, Lea!

Love the ideas, Lea! We, too, read books to our children (and now have a few I've accumulated for grandchildren). Grandchildren make the name cards for our tables (can't wait to see what Abby comes up with). We usually have a few pencil/paper games, thanksgiving related to do as we sit around the table afterwards...Word Hunts, etc.

That's a great card. I haven't done place cards for a few years so maybe it's time to do them again. Thanks for the link.

I love your ideas! The cards are so cute, and the books are always something the kids love.

This year... not me... we will all be at our daughter's, so it is going to be fun to see what new traditions she has in mind. I'm bringing flowers and pies and the kids are doing all the rest!! :)

I will make up for it when Christmas Eve comes!

One life long tradition has been that of inviting those I affectionately call 'strays' to spend the day with us. No one should be alone for the holidays and, if every family invited one or two strays, the world would be a better place. :)

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Oh Lea, your scriptures here make my heart glad and my eyes well up; God is so generous with His grace and I am constantly repeating the same doubts about myself....when will I ever learn to just trust in Him....

Thank you for visiting me. It is a humbling experience to even have anyone enjoy my simple but truly heartfelt thoughts.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving dearest! Anita

I copied down the names of those books. I'm gonna look into them, because I'd like to teach my littles more about Thanksgiving; you know, the wheres and whyfores and such.

In reference to your comment on my last Sunday Six post:
Yes, that is correct! So uh, are you gonna take me up on it? :)

(It seems like at one point I had your email address and I could just email you my replies directly, but I don't have it.... did I ever, I wonder??)
