moonlight farewell

the orchestra serenaded us with 'moonlight sonata', the soft glow
of candlelight winked at us, and the delicate pink dogwood
branches bowed to us from tall crystal vases.

excited conversation peppered the ballroom like champagne
bubbles, for this was a joyous occasion celebrating the season's
young debutantes.  the two most precious ones belonged to us.

my brother in law bemoaned the fleeting childhood of our daughters,
and i took a sip of water to give myself a moment to blink back hot
tears.  one minute, we are their world, and the next, the world is their
oyster. . . and we are just the sand.

having passed through this valley four times before, though, i tried to
comfort us both with the knowledge that while the pulling away is
painful, it makes the reunion sweeter.

love,
lea

As I've watch friends' children grow up and leave home in the blink of an eye, I always wonder if parents realize how quickly the time goes by. Clearly, you do. It seemed a lot slower when we were the ones growing up.

Sigh.

Boy, what a day to read this entry. I have missed my sweet #3 daughter so much. She and her husband are 3rd year medicial students in Loma Linda, Calif. I have longed for her all day long with tears. The Lord in His sweet comfort must have touched her heart and she sent me a pic of her showing me her stomach. She is 6 months pregnant. My grandson is growing and it reminded me of joyeous times ahead. Annie

Your daughters are lovely, and yes, you were celebrating a momentous event, as they move forward in their lives and you remain "the sand".

Vee said...

Lovely girls! Gosh you have a wonderful way with words, but I'm sure that your daughter would not describe you as mere "sand." :D All parents soon learn how fleeting time is and if one's children's childhood flies away, you can imagine how quickly one's grandchildren grow. My grandmother says that an entire century went by in a flash.

Now which is your daughter and which is your niece? Not telling? I think that the gal on the right is your daughter because I think she looks most like you, but I am often wrong on such things.

vee, the brunette is my daughter, but
the blonde is my niece.

They are both so beautiful, and young! Time flies so swiftly by and one day they will be expressing the same sentiments you have here. But not yet, not now~ they are rushing forward to experience life as young adults. And to be your friends as well as your beloved daughters.

As an aunt I have taken delight in watching the young ones blossom into adulthood ... though I've not had to experience the jolt this entails for the parent.

Oh, Lea, I'm on the cusp of this, myself. Three more years with my precious daughter and then I must release her to her own life....one that will include me, on the periphery, but not at it's center. I hope to do it with as much grace as you have! Gorgeous girls, by the way! xx Suzanne

You have now pulled into the lead, with the mustard comment...as I mention to Becky...Reading the fine print is always important {winner receives a LIFE supply of "PORK EUPHORIA"...} We can always hope for another poor soul to play ;D
Sending a HUGE hug your way, love Rosie

Well! Wrong again! Me, not you. Obviously, you know which one is your daughter. ;> Perhaps I can remember this because my daughter is the brunette and my niece is the blonde. Oops. The other niece is a brunette. Okay, I won't be remembering that because I'm already mixed up.

Such beautiful girls. It looks like they had a wonderful time growing up together. What a wonderful relationship!

I have been sad for the last month that my daughter is going to be a senior next year. She is totally ready for it. Her dad and I are not.

Congrats to both girls on the big day!

Your girls are beautiful. It is such a mixed emotion to be proud that your daughters are independent and ready to face the world. Yet, at the same time wouldn't we just love the little girl versions of them to run in the door after playing outside.

The reunion is the sweetest though. I gave my daughter a card for her birthday that said "I miss the little girl that I once knew, but then again if she came through the door, I would miss the young woman you have become."
